Sustainable travel tips
Travel is a privilege — and with that comes the responsibility to tread gently. Over the years, I’ve picked up a few simple, practical ways to make my adventures a little kinder to the planet, the communities I visit, and the animals I encounter.

1. Buy Second-Hand & Pack Smart
Shop vintage, charity stores, or second-hand apps before your trip
Choose timeless staples in natural fibres (cotton, linen, bamboo)
Support local women’s collectives and artisans whenever possible
—
🛍️ 2. Support Local
Eat, shop, and stay locally
Book tours with local guides or companies that employ locals
Platforms like GetYourGuide or group trips like Intrepid support local economies
—
🚆 3. Travel Mindfully
Use public transport whenever possible
Carry cash to support small businesses and avoid card processing fees
Tip generously — it makes a big difference
—
🌱 4. Cut Down on Waste
Always bring reusable bags
Take biodegradable bags for rubbish or bush toilet stops
Use a water filter bottle or buy the largest bottled water to refill
Pack light
—
🐾 5. Respect Animals & Wildlife
Avoid meat where possible — conditions abroad can be poor
Say no to elephant rides, tiger selfies, or any exploitative attractions
Research zoos, rescue centres, or rehab facilities before visiting
Support organisations that rescue, rehabilitate, and educate
Example: I visited a rehab centre near Cusco, Peru, which rescued trafficked animals and worked with local schools to protect condors. Condors were being killed because locals thought they harmed crops, but they are vultures and only eat dead animals. Education and responsible tourism make a huge difference.

☀️ 6. Protect Nature & Habitats
Use reef-safe, paraben-free suncream
Don’t touch wildlife or coral, and don’t pick plants
Take only memories, leave only footprints
—
✈️ 7. Travel Consciously
Offset carbon emissions from flights where possible
Start the day with meditation or yoga to ground yourself
Small, mindful choices add up — your actions matter.

Tromsø – Arctic Magic, Aurora Chasing & Sámi Culture
Arriving in Tromsø We landed around 8pm, collected the hire car, checked into the loveliest Airbnb and did the classic late-night supermarket run. On the way back we stopped at Prestvannet, the big frozen lake on the hill overlooking Tromsø. It’s one of the best in-town northern lights spots thanks to low light pollution and…

Madagascar: Where the Earth Burns and the Lemurs Sing
Highlights:A month in Madagascar was a collision of wonder and heartbreak. I watched giant baobabs sway at sunset, heard black-and-white lemurs calling in the national parks, and stood on the Tsingy as if on another planet. Accommodations were simple but welcoming, the weather glorious, and the views unforgettable. I felt both the energy and the…

Plant-Based Food Finds Around the World
Traveling plant-based can be a challenge — sometimes you’re in a city full of options, and other times it’s a struggle to find variety. Over the years, I’ve learned a few essentials I always carry: oat milk, protein powder and snacks, and nut butter for those in-between meals. But the real joy is discovering incredible…

Yoga on the Road
Sit in stillness. Meditate. Be kind to those around you — even (and especially) when you’re exhausted with jet lag. Travel can be disorientating, but these simple intentions keep me grounded wherever I go. I try to move through the world lightly: avoiding waste, treading gently, and starting my days with a moment of quiet.…

Healing Through Sound
The rhythm of travel has a way of tuning me in. As I walk through winding paths, markets, and quiet stretches of nature, I start to notice the sounds that usually pass by unnoticed — the rustle of trees swaying in the breeze, the flow of rivers carving their way through the land, the distant…

Nursing and Nature: Where Care Meets Calm
Nursing has always been more than a job — it’s a calling that asks for every part of you. The mind that never switches off. The heart that carries stories long after the shift ends. The hands that keep giving, even when they’re tired. In the whirlwind of alarms, fluorescent lights, and constant motion, it’s…
